Son Muntaner lies in the Son Vida hills above Palma, close enough to be a natural golf day for travellers staying near Castillo Hotel Son Vida but different enough from the older Son Vida course to justify its own identity. Designed by Kurt Rossknecht and opened in 2000, it uses a wide range of holes among established pines, water features and the rolling outskirts of the capital.
It is a modern, championship-capable layout rather than a seaside sightseeing round. Its greens can be generous, but bunkers and elevations reward control, and the trees ask the golfer to choose a useful line. The combination gives Son Muntaner appeal beyond its convenient hotel location.
Why You Should Play Golf Son Muntaner
The strongest reason to add Son Muntaner is the way it completes a Palma-led Mallorca trip. Serious golfers can play an established modern course without spending the day crossing the island, and the design retains enough water, bunkers and shaped green surrounds to produce a demanding scorecard.
Rossknecht built a layout that is more accommodating to a range of playing abilities than its tournament credentials might suggest. A shorter tee can still preserve the need to choose an angle or control an approach; moving to the longest markers increases the challenge without changing the essential architecture. The well-defined woodland gives the course a calm, confident atmosphere that differs from Son Gual's broad inland stage.
Some of the course's character is found in the variety of green sites and the use of established vegetation. Across the routing, the challenge comes from choosing the correct line through the trees and then dealing with the shape and protection of the greens. A generous landing area can still leave a demanding next shot.
Course History and Design
The course hosted the 2022 Mallorca Golf Open on the DP World Tour, won by Yannik Paul, and later professional women's golf events. Son Vida and Son Quint are separate courses within the Arabella Golf group. Son Muntaner's own tournament history complements its appeal as a wooded, modern layout.
Mallorca Golf Trip Planning
Golf Son Gual is an inland championship test east of Palma; T Golf Calvià offers restored classic parkland southwest of the city. Son Muntaner sits particularly well with a Castillo Hotel Son Vida base and can be followed by Alcanada in the north on a separate day. The hotel base and driving geography decide whether a fourth round improves the itinerary.
A Son Vida hotel base is especially useful for visiting Son Muntaner without repeated transfers across the island. Son Gual offers a more expansive inland championship style, while T Golf Calvià brings older parkland character to the southwest. For visitors who also want the coastal scenery of Alcanada, that northern course fits as another day of a longer Mallorca stay.
Scorecard and Visitor Play
Son Muntaner plays to par 72 from five tee sets: White at 6,305 metres, Yellow at 5,985, Blue at 5,430, Red at 5,098 and Orange at 4,320. The shorter Orange set widens the range of golfers who can enjoy its strategic water hazards, tree-framed fairways and carefully defended greens.
Arabella Golf welcomes visiting golfers to Son Muntaner, which is a separate eighteen-hole course from Son Vida and Son Quint. Some visitor bookings from March through November include a shared buggy. The course is especially well placed for a Palma or Son Vida golf stay, with Son Gual and T Golf Calvià providing distinct companion rounds.
