Tróia Golf sits on the sandy Tróia Peninsula south of Setúbal, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sado Estuary. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the original course, which opened in 1980 and became one of Portugal's distinctive coastal golf destinations. Its pines, sandy ground and architectural heritage offer a different golfing character from the new courses around Carvalhal.
Tróia is currently undergoing a comprehensive renovation, with reopening planned for early 2027. This guide covers the course's established history, coastal location, relationship to Dunas and Torre, and the operator's announced plans. It does not assume the renovated layout is already playable.
Why You Should Play Tróia Golf
Tróia offers the prospect of a Robert Trent Jones Sr. course in a setting quite unlike the conventional inland resort. The peninsula's sand, pines and proximity to both ocean and estuary shape its identity. The original design became known for strategically placed bunkers, doglegs and demanding approaches.
Its architectural appeal also differs from its neighbours. Dunas reflects David McLay-Kidd's modern approach to sandy landforms, while Torre is Sergio García's first signature design. Tróia adds an older, more formal school of golf architecture to a future three-course Comporta itinerary.
A Classic Course Undergoing Renewal
Opened in 1980, Tróia belongs to an earlier period in Portuguese golf development. The current renovation is intended to modernise the course and facilities while preserving the character of its original design. Tróia Resort has also announced major clubhouse improvements.
The precise playing experience after renovation cannot yet be described with certainty. New green contours, tee configurations, playing surfaces and visitor arrangements should be documented from the completed course, rather than inferred from the former scorecard.
Tróia and the Comporta Golf Coast
Tróia occupies the northern part of the peninsula; Dunas and Torre are farther south near Carvalhal. Together they form a geographically coherent golf destination, with very different architectural approaches along the same stretch of Portuguese coast.
Tróia Marina provides one possible base, while Comporta and Carvalhal put visitors closer to Dunas and Torre. The broader landscape combines Atlantic beaches, pine woodland, the Sado Estuary and rural Alentejo scenery. This is a setting in which the journey between rounds contributes to the destination's appeal.
When Will Tróia Golf Reopen?
Tróia Resort expects the renovated course to reopen in early 2027. Some travel trade information cites March 2027 as a target, but this remains a projected timetable, not a confirmed resumption of visitor golf.
Until the operator confirms reopening, Tróia should be regarded as a future itinerary option. There is no verified post-renovation scorecard or confirmed new visitor greenfee to publish.
